Ever had an issue with Canada Geese on your property? Canada Geese are migratory birds and are protected by the Migratory Bird Treaty Act. They are protected by federal law and are managed by the Fish and Wildlife Service. The subspecies we are most familiar with here in North Carolina that some consider a pest have a weak migratory instinct. Canada Geese that do not migrate are called residents. The resident population is regulated differently than the migratory population.

What is Algae?

“Algae” is a broad term referring to a diverse group of aquatic organisms that contain chlorophyll and produce energy through photosynthesis. Unlike plants, algae do not have stems, flowers, or vascular tissues. However, some algae look like plants–seaweed is a type of multicellular algae that can grow in huge forests, while species in the genus Chara resemble small freshwater plants. Other types of algae grow in mats (filamentous algae) while the smallest species don’t have a solid form but instead just turn the water column green (planktonic algae). Though many species are harmless, there are some that contain toxins that can be deadly, so it is important to keep algae under control.

Most of our clients that have a fountain in their pond allow fishing in their pond. There have always been concerns about the potential issues that can arise from allowing people to fish in a pond with a fountain.

During construction, areas around a pond or stormwater device can become disturbed by the machines working in the area. In this case, the backside of this pond dam was bare from being freshly graded to meet specifications. To prevent future erosion and to stabilize the area after the job was completed our client opted to sod the bare areas.

A client in Oxford, NC contacted us about having an issue with their fountain not working. After a site visit, we were able to determine that the capacitors were faulty and not working properly. In cases like this, we order and replace the capacitors and fix that issue before we address any other issues.

A local animal care center recently contacted us to install an aerating fountain on their on-site pond used by dogs to cool off, play, and get exercise. After speaking with the owner about exactly what they were looking for, we found a reliable, low-maintenance aerator that would promote a healthier pond by circulating that water and keeping the oxygen level up.

Stocking your pond correctly can be one of the toughest aspects of owning a pond. With so many fish species to choose from, it’s easy to make unsuitable decisions when deciding what to stock. Ensuring your body of water contains a diverse population of fish is an integral part of creating an environmentally balanced aquatic ecosystem. It is also important to consider your overall lake and pond management goals as well as which species will provide appropriate benefits to your pond or lake.

We have some exciting news here at Triangle Pond Management! This coming weekend, May 14th, we will move to a new location! We plan to relocate our operations to 405 S Rogers Ln, Raleigh, NC 27610.
